One week of holiday each year of a working life is equal to about a year's work in total. So in a sensible world you'd be able to take an extra week of every year, and retire a bit later to make up for it. Or if you wanted to retire early, you could take less time off.

Which would you choose, and why?

[Poll #726982]

OK, to me this one feels like a no-brainer - give me more holiday and more years working. Not just because retirement seems to have a negative effect on most people, but because holiday in the midst of stress is going to be more welcome than yet another week when there's nothing to do but the gardening.

So why do we end up spending years cherishing a few weeks off, and then have a vast expanse of nothingness before we die?

I hope I'm still working on something interesting, in which case life with more holiday should be reasonably nice.

I neglected the consideration that if you work really hard and buy a house asap and then take it easy you should have to work less hard in total than if you take a long time because you're not paying off interest for as long.

On the basis that if I take a week from them, they take a year from me, I think I'd start my own business.
