(no subject)

Just back from London, dripping wet (Cambridge station is very, very in the wrong place!) but happy. Will probably write about it in dribs and drabs [1], but for now I'm going to have a binge of friending people who I befriended at [livejournal.com profile] the_alchemist and [livejournal.com profile] verlaine's housewarming.

And while my head's in Saturday, I might as well say it was fantastic, in a way that events usually are when they're full of fascinating people I don't know. Since the thing was organised on lj, I'd spotted a couple of people I'd been aware of for some time without ever talking to: [livejournal.com profile] smhwpf, [livejournal.com profile] libellum, and [livejournal.com profile] verlaine himself. So, of course, they were the people I didn't talk to at all, and instead chatted excitedly to [livejournal.com profile] squirmelia, [livejournal.com profile] pseudomonas, [livejournal.com profile] publicansdecoy, [livejournal.com profile] angelofthenorth, and [livejournal.com profile] robert_jones. Also a couple of others who will now be written out of history because they don't use livejournal, or because they use it but have non-memorable names [2]. So it goes.

I'm now 5 days behind on lj, and won't be doing more than skimming back through it. If there's anything you'd particularly like me to see, point!

[1] Yes, I can use silly phrases if I want to

[2] I know, I know, [livejournal.com profile] oedipamaas49 is about as bad as it gets on those criteria. I've been regretting it for 18 months now, and I'll be changing it just as soon as I can come up with something better. Suggestions welcome :)

Do you know why Cambridge Station is placed where it is?

Only that people generally blame the university. But blame the university for anything that happens in cambridge, and you'll be right 9 times out of 10.

They put it there so that the students wouldn't be as tempted to leave the city as it was a bit far to walk!

Hilarity.

I can in all seriousness believe that.

I believe it. I heard it on the big red open top tour bus.
I have no reason to not believe it since a lot of the stuff they said I knew to be true.

Kinda made me laugh at the stupidity though, because even if you walk, it's really not that far!

Positioning of train stations is usually based on the quality, type, height etc. etc. of the land when the track is originally laid, which can make it impossible to have a station in the city centre without massive cost and damage to surrounding areas.

I don't think there *was* a [livejournal.com profile] libellum there, you know!

Lovely to (almost) meet you, in any case...

I can't *spell* your name, but certainly consider it distinctive.
