This may save on faffing around with MSN:

Everyone on Livejournal now has a Jabber IM account. If you use a chat client like Gaim (linux/mac/windows), you just add another account: server is livejournal.com, your username and password are as for livejournal. Your friendslist has been auto-imported.

yeah, it's in competition to msn and yahoo. What i do is to use Gaim, which lets me do this, msn, yahoo, aim, irc, etc all from the same program. That way i can stalk my friends regardless of what they're using to chat with.
