Is there any chance of these monks not being slaughtered, or at least jailed and beaten up?

Depends: do they even have Foot and Mouth?

Probably not, but it might start a revolution.

They know they're likely to be slaughtered, or jailed/beaten up. And they're doing it anyway.

Something's gotta give.

impressive, isn't it? Even if it totally backfires, you have to admire their guts. And not just a few of them, tens of thousands.

It would seem not. Except…

Why hasn't it happened already? And why was Aung San Suu Kyi allowed out to greet them?

Maybe the authorities are letting things escalate because they fancy a nice, big bloodbath, I guess.

*nods*

There must be something strange going on amidst the rulers there. Maybe some of the generals want to stage a putsch of their own within the existing regime, and piggybacking on this lets them climb to the top while looking like good people. Or perhaps they're afraid that (parts of) the army wouldn't follow an order to attack the demonstrations.

It's reaching the point where even a bloodbath gets tricky. 100,000 people: that's a lot of bullets, and a lot of bodies to get rid of. Maybe they just screwed up somehow.

Could go either way. Will the military obey an order to attack them? How much pressure is China putting on Burma not to go over the top?

Highly dangerous, but hopeful.

Well, it looks like they've survived another day. I guess that means they'll be back tomorrow with even more people; these marches seem to have been nearly doubling in size each day.

I just wish I had more of an idea what happens then.

Apparently there are fake monks in with the real ones ready to start violence so that the government has an excuse to start killing them all. It's very very sad and I hope that it doesn't happen.

Good luck to them is all I can say.
