Berlin still good.

I'm living in Kreuzberg, which is something like Berlin's answer to Camden. This bar is a street away from me, and there are so, so many other great places nearby.

On [livejournal.com profile] karohemd's suggestion (thanks), I headed off to K17 on Friday. Start by imaging slimelight. Then take out most of the druggies, add in a floor of 80s goodness, reduce the price, get rid of the paranoia-inducing door policy, and tilt the gender balance to 75% female. Unfortunately, you also have to get rid of the 50p coffee and the pretty boys - despite being surrounded by stunning-looking women, the men seem to make no effort beyond putting on a clean t-shirt. Yes, I know I'm being hypocritical, but I feel like next time I'll have to do the whole "daubing my face in inexpertly-applied black makeup" thing, just so *somebody* does.

There are other good things about Berlin - but the goth bits seemed easiest to translate for LJ.

Surely the men just putting on a clean t-shirt is just the same as at the Calling? I haven't been to a goth club which is any different, and I've been complaining about it since I met the camgoths. Men wearing makeup=good.

yes, to some extent. But there are quite a few men at the calling who do make an effort. Nobody could accuse [livejournal.com profile] dreamfracture of not trying, for example. But, no thomases at that club, apparently.

And men wearing makeup - the problem is that we haven't gone through the same years of learning how to put on makeup without looking like you've got a black eye. It might look good in theory, but in practice it'd be just blotches of colour on our faces.

Ah, I haven't met Thomas, though I have heard much about him. And I can't think of anyone else.

I'm sure any of the girls who go to the Calling would be happy to put makeup on you guys. I do find it a little annoying that women seem to be expected to own corsets and to make a huge effort with their makeup, whereas men only have to wear a black T-shirt.

Again, glad to hear you're happy hun :).

Um...almost entirely by other women, I think you'll find. This isn't one you can blame on the patriarchy, at least not directly.

Nobody seems to expect me to do it, and last time I checked there was a cunt down here.

I think I said that in the wrong way. I suspect that no one really cares what I wear to the Calling. When I do dress up, I do so because I want to. But I do wish there was less of a difference between the way the men dress and the way the women dress.

You have an empty niche! Quick, get thee some eyeliner and fill it! (Liquid eyeliner is easier, or just mascara and judicious use of finger to smudge it at the right angle.)
